“And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, ‘Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat of it: for in the day that you eat thereof you shall surely die’.” [Genesis 2:16-17]
Well, we all know the story, the devil came and tempted Eve, and the woman ate the fruit. But what was this forbidden fruit?

“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” [Genesis 3:6]

The Forbidden Fruit

There have been all sorts of speculations and even conclusions as to what actually took place between Eve and the serpent. Some say that the fruit which Eve ate of was an apple (as is so often depicted in children books and bibles) while others speculate that it was sex and that Cain was a direct product of that act of copulation. But what does the Bible really say? The truth is in the Bible and nowhere else.

Firstly, we need to recognize the fact that the Bible said it was a fruit that had to be eaten. So, we can easily conclude that it was food. But was it really an apple? If it was an apple, then no human being has a chance, because almost all of us eat apples. I believe we all know the age-old expression, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”.  So I think we can logically deduce that the fruit spoken about was not an apple.

It was also not the serpent having sex with Eve. If it was, then Adam would not have fallen. In fact it was Adam who fell not the woman. Eve was deceived but Adam was fully aware of what he was doing. God had blessed their union when He made them: “And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it….” [Genesis 1:28]

How would they have multiplied and fill the earth without sex? So, it was not sex.

It is normal for a baby who is being fed to grow but that growth is usually imperceptible by others, except perhaps the parents who would notice that the baby is gradually getting heavier. They will also notice that the child’s clothes are getting tighter and there is constant need to increase the size. However, those outside the immediate family would constantly be amazed at growth of the child, at say, six month intervals.

It must be recognized that food is not just physical. We have this record; “But he answered and said, ‘It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God’.” [Matthew 4:4]

The Words that come out of the mouth of God gives life to the soul of a man. It is food to the soul. “A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors feeds on violence.” [Proverbs 13:2]

Here is another clue.  “So that his life abhors bread, and his soul the choicest food.” [Job 33:20].  So we see, the soul can eat and drink.

The same Hebrew root word, nephesh, used for soul here is the same used in Genesis 2:7, “And man became a living soul”.

In essence, the fruit that the devil gave Eve to eat was spiritual illumination. “Knowledge of good and evil” that is what Genesis 2 verse 17 says. The devil took from God’s hidden knowledge and gave it to man. It was spiritual food – hidden spiritual knowledge.

The Stolen Secrets
It was insight into things that God, on purpose, kept hidden. There are some things of God we have no business trying to find out. Anything not written in the common Holy Bible available to us is not meant for us.

“The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” [Deuteronomy 29:29]

God, in His infinite wisdom, has reserved some things to Himself, and when He wants to, “He reveals the deep and secret things: he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him.” [Daniel 2:22]

In fact, He says if we want to know the secret things we should ask Him. “Ask me of things to come concerning my sons.” [Isaiah 45:11] If we ask, and he feels it will benefit us, he will give it to us. He is good! He does not withhold goodness from His children.

This is what the occult is all about, the sabotage of God’s secret. The devil steals those things, adds his own twist and serves the poisoned chalice to man so as to kill and ultimately destroy him. “The thief comes not, but to steal, and to kill, and to destroy…” [John 10:10] He exchanged a stolen property for the life of God in Adam. Adam bit the fruit!

Secret Knowledge – They belong to God

Can you see why Jesus referred to the Devil as “the thief”? He stole from God’s archive!

Occult simply means ‘hidden knowledge’. It is the knowledge that is uncommon. It is about the dark supernatural world, and it imparts the ability to interact with the spiritual world in a way that brings them into our terrestrial world. Plainly defined, occult is a form of divination. Divination is the act of forcibly invoking the supernatural world into our world.

The Power of the Blood
“You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination or soothsaying.” [Leviticus 19:26]

The basic forms of occult or divination involve advanced psychology (study of the mind), making the mind take on a form beyond its natural capabilities of the five senses; that is, the use of the sixth sense. This act is the first step into opening up an individual to the supernatural world, which the devil inhabits to perpetrate his evil works. Invariably, this act in itself, being contrary to the nature of God, irritates and provokes the anger of God.

Interacting with the supernatural world through the use of the occult degrades and reduces man, a creation meant for royalty, into servitude of the fallen angels. Hence, the commandment given to Adam in the garden – do not eat from this hidden storage.

The higher forms of occult require man to start shedding blood. This usually starts with the shedding of animal blood and gradually graduates to higher forms of life and intelligence, the ultimate of which is human life.

God purposely encased life in the blood, without the life of God in that blood there is no life in the being.  In the same way that you can have a higher volume of water in the seas so does man have a higher concentration of the life of God in him, in comparison to any other being in the universe. The fallen angels, devoid of the life of God because they have been cast away from His Presence, always seek to get a fill of that life through the blood;  hence, their desire to feed off blood.

Now, it is not just spilling the blood and walking away that gives man access to the dark world. The man has to say something and that is where the knowledge fully manifests. Words such as spells, incantations, false doctrines, etc. are said and spirits are invoked. The spirits respond to the invocation to carry out specifics. This is the forbidden fruit!

The man who spills the blood and invokes the spirits of darkness becomes more depraved and grows into the likeness of the spirits he is engaging. He is deceived into thinking that his rituals and invocations of the devils give him superiority over these forces of darkness. However, the reverse is true. He is the one becoming the slave and the spirits are becoming the master.

The spirits he interacts with start taking over his being and transforming him to become like them. The deceived man gets these supernatural beings to run errands for him and they, invariably, suck the life of God away from his soul. This is why devils always require man to sell his soul – they want that soul because it has the life of God stored in it.

The diviner becomes ruled by the pride of life, thereby manifesting the works of the flesh such as “adultery, fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, strife, jealousy, wrath, selfishness, divisions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings, and such like.” [Galatians 5:19-21] Those “who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God”.

Are You Married To Spirits?

The interaction of the soul of man with a spirit is akin to a marital relationship. The marriage of the soul to spiritual entities is the ultimate sacrifice of man. This is why God keeps saying that Israel does commit adultery.

“And I saw, when for all the causes for which backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away….” [Jeremiah 3:8 KJV]

Only God is entitled to this marriage, the aim of which is to make man like God and rule over all the work of His hands. This marriage is not the same as sexual interaction between a man and his wife. Angels do not have sex (Matthew 22:30). But the ideology is akin to all the emotions of the union of a man and his wife. Yet, the devil steals this opportunity from man by enticing him with the forbidden fruit.

The marriage of God’s Spirit with the soul of man produces the fruit of the Spirit, the nature of God, which are “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, self-control”. [Galatians 5:22-23] This is what brings ultimate pleasure to God. The very reason He created us – to give Him pleasure.

The demonstration of God’s ultimate rejection of Man was what we saw demonstrated in the Garden of Eden when Man was thrown out of the Garden. The same will happen again, but this time around, it will be eternal separation. This is why divination is declared to defile the diviner.

God declares, “The person who turns to those who have familiar spirits and to wizards, [being unfaithful to Israel’s Maker Who is her Husband, and thus] playing the harlot after them, I will set My face against that person and will cut him off from among his people [that he may not be included in the atonement made for them]. [ref Isaiah 54:5.] Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy; for I am the Lord your God. And you shall keep My statutes and do them. I am the Lord Who sanctifies you.” (Leviticus 20:6-8 Amplified).

Witness of The Blood

The blood sacrifice God demanded from man before the advent of Christ was to get man into a state of purity where the man would realize that he needs the life of God to complete his existence on earth and reign over God’s creation.”

It was to get him to become one with the Spirit of God and bring forth the fruit of the Spirit. Yet man continually failed to understand this, hence the ultimate sacrifice – the shedding of God’s own blood. God became the Lamb and allowed His own blood to be shed to bring man into union with Him.

Guarding Against The Forbidden Fruit
It is unfortunate Eve and Adam preferred to feed on the bread that proceeded from Satan’s mouth than the one from their Maker. More unfortunate is the fact; man still prefers Satan’s word.

“And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” [John 3:19]

How do you know that any new illumination you gain is from God or the devil? As you read and study the Bible, any knowledge you gain must achieve ONE main thing for you – make you become more and more like Christ, anything else is not of God. So, understanding the mysteries of God should bring us to conform to the image of Christ.

The forbidden fruit will bring darkness. Initially, it may seem like light, but because it will be driving you AWAY from God, it is actually darkness. But, the living word of God will make the beauty of Christ to shine in and through you and you will become more and more like Christ Himself.
